Switzerland Beat Canada 2-1, Top Group B; Co-Hosts Make History

Switzerland Clinch Group B Top Spot with Victory Over Canada

Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi scored second-half goals to lead Switzerland to a 2-1 win over Canada in Vancouver on Wednesday, securing top spot in World Cup Group B. The result also ensured Canada, the co-hosts, advanced to the knockout rounds for the first time in their history, finishing second in the group.

Both teams entered the match knowing victory would guarantee first place and a theoretically easier path in the knockout stage. Switzerland finished with seven points, while Canada ended on four points but still progressed to the last 32.

Second-Half Strikes Decide the Match

After a goalless first half, Vargas broke the deadlock seconds after the interval. Manzambi's cross from the right found Vargas unmarked at the back post, where he took an excellent first touch before firing past goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau. Manzambi then doubled the lead in the 57th minute, scoring his third goal of the tournament after capitalizing on poor goalkeeping following hold-up play by Breel Embolo.

Canada pulled one back in the final 15 minutes through Promise David, who stretched to convert a sublime cross from Nathan Saliba. The goal set up a tense finish, with a leveller for Canada potentially sending them through as group winners. The Canadians came close from set pieces but Switzerland held on.

Historic Achievement for Canada

Canada's second-place finish marks a historic milestone. Prior to the 2026 World Cup, the North Americans had never won a match at the finals. They will now face the runner-up from Group A on Sunday in Los Angeles. Switzerland will meet one of the best third-placed sides next week.

In the other Group B match, Bosnia-Herzegovina defeated Qatar 3-1 to finish third with four points. They now face an anxious wait to see if that total is enough to advance as one of the best third-placed teams.

Emotional Tribute and Key Moments

Before kick-off, Canada midfielder Ismael Kone was brought onto the pitch in a wheelchair after suffering a leg break in Canada's 6-0 win over Qatar last week. He received a standing ovation from the BC Place Vancouver crowd.

Switzerland had an early chance when Embolo fired straight at the goalkeeper, and Manzambi's rebound was blocked by a defender. Canada's best first-half opportunities came from Cyle Larin, whose cut-in and shot was saved by Gregor Kobel, and Ali Ahmed, whose tame effort was palmed wide by the Swiss stopper.

Canada coach Jesse Marsch made three substitutions after Manzambi's goal, including introducing LAFC midfielder Stephen Eustaquio. Jonathan David, who scored a hat-trick in Canada's previous match, turned and fired at goal but Nico Elvedi blocked the effort.
