A tragic train accident occurred in Bangkok on Saturday when a cargo train slammed into a public bus at a railway crossing, resulting in at least eight fatalities. The incident took place in the late afternoon near an airport rail link station in the central part of Thailand's capital, according to local news reports.
Details of the Crash
The Erawan Medical Center, the city's emergency response service, confirmed that at least eight people were killed and more than 20 others sustained injuries. Social media footage captured the moment of impact, showing a line of vehicles stopped at the crossing as the cargo train struck an orange bus. The force of the collision dragged several nearby vehicles along the tracks before the bus erupted in flames. Motorcycles and their riders were also thrown onto the road.
Rescue Operations
Later videos depicted rescuers entering the charred bus after firefighters brought the blaze under control. Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat stated at the crash site that all recovered bodies were found inside the bus. He noted that the exact number of passengers on board remains unclear.
Investigation Underway
When questioned about whether the bus had stopped on the tracks or if the crossing barriers malfunctioned, Siripong said these aspects require further investigation. Witness Kittipong Raksa, who had parked his car near the tracks, heard the warning signal and then a thud. He recounted seeing the train pass, dragging the bus, and later finding a person trapped under his car with a broken leg. Kittipong also mentioned he did not see the barriers lower.
