Paraguay managed a consolation goal in the 73rd minute through Brazil-born forward Mauricio, capitalizing on a rare defensive lapse. However, the visitors struggled to compete with the pace, intensity and tactical discipline of the Americans throughout the match.
Paraguay coach Gustavo Alfaro acknowledged his team had been outclassed. "The United States were superior in every aspect of the game. They controlled the match tactically, technically and physically," Alfaro admitted.
Canada Earns First World Cup Point
Meanwhile, in Toronto, fellow co-hosts Canada celebrated a landmark moment in their football history by earning their first-ever World Cup point. Cyle Larin struck in the second half to secure a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina after Jovo Lukic had given the visitors the lead.
The opening day also featured developments off the field, with Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey reportedly denied a Canadian visa, preventing him from travelling for his team's opening fixture.
