Simo emphasized that this fragmentation "has been slowing us down and making it harder to hit the quality bar we want." By merging these key applications, OpenAI seeks to create a more streamlined user experience and accelerate development cycles.
The move comes at a time when OpenAI is navigating increased competition, particularly from rival Anthropic, which has gained traction with its Claude Code offering. In response, OpenAI leadership is focusing on prioritizing core projects and avoiding distractions. Simo recently advised employees to steer clear of "side quests," highlighting the importance of doubling down on successful ventures like Codex.
