Pakistan's Central Development Working Party (CDWP) this week approved artificial intelligence, railway, and satellite development projects worth over $1.5 billion, clearing them for cabinet consideration as the government seeks to expand digital infrastructure, modernize transport, and boost its space capabilities.
Strategic Investments in Technology and Infrastructure
Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal presided over a CDWP meeting on Thursday, which reviewed and considered a range of development initiatives aimed at strengthening key sectors of the national economy and accelerating the government's reform agenda, according to the Pakistani information ministry.
The forum approved 15 development projects worth Rs34.740 billion ($125 million), while 9 major projects with a cumulative cost of Rs431.022 billion ($1.5 billion) were recommended to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) for further consideration.
Key Projects Approved
The approved projects include the establishment of a Geospatial Complex (GEO-AI Development and Innovation Hub), Establishment of Robotics Center of Excellence, Establishment of Emerging Technologies Data Center, National Artificial Intelligence Ecosystem Development Program (NAIEDP), Pakistan Communication Satellite–2 (PakSat-2), and Upgradation of Track and Allied Infrastructure on the 996-kilometer ML-3 Rohri–Sibi–Quetta–Koh-e-Taftan railway section.
Pakistan has stepped up efforts in recent years to expand its digital infrastructure as part of a broader strategy to boost economic growth, improve public services, and attract investment, prioritizing AI, digital governance, and broadband connectivity, while seeking to develop a technology-driven economy through public and private sector initiatives.
Modernizing Railway Network
At the same time, Islamabad has pursued upgrades to its aging railway network to improve freight and passenger transport and strengthen regional trade links. The upgradation of the 996-kilometer ML-3 section is a significant step toward this goal.
Pakistan has also sought to expand its space capabilities through satellite development and partnerships aimed at enhancing communications, navigation, and natural disaster management. The PakSat-2 project is expected to bolster these efforts.

Strategic investments in technology and infrastructure are essential for accelerating Pakistan's journey toward a knowledge-based and competitive economy, Iqbal was quoted as saying. The approved projects are aligned with the vision of URAAN Pakistan, focusing on digital transformation, modern infrastructure, connectivity, and sustainable economic growth.
