Excessive use of social media without understanding its harmful effects is having a serious impact on society, according to Zafar Rustam from Balochistan. Social media platforms continue to evolve rapidly, affecting people’s behaviour through social isolation, declining mental health, and poor time management.
Impact on Children and Teenagers
Excessive use of social media is diminishing children’s ability to think critically, while many teenagers are becoming addicted to platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube. These platforms can have a harmful impact on the brain, and many young people experience mental health problems as a result.
Mental Health Statistics in Pakistan
Approximately 38% of Pakistanis are reported to be struggling with mental health disorders, including depression and anxiety. This statistic highlights the widespread nature of the issue, which is exacerbated by social media use.
What Makes Social Media Addictive?
Interactive features such as likes, comments, and shares encourage teenagers to seek constant validation. As a result, many feel pressured to promote their online presence and remain continuously active on social media, often at the expense of their mental well-being.
