South Korean Woman Faces Murder Charges After Using ChatGPT to Research Lethal Drug-Alcohol Mix

A 21-year-old South Korean woman has been formally charged with the murders of two men in Seoul, following a disturbing investigation that revealed she used the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT to research the risks of combining alcohol and drugs. According to a detailed report by the BBC, authorities uncovered evidence on her phone showing multiple queries sent to ChatGPT, including "What happens if you take sleeping pills with alcohol?", "Could it kill someone?", and "How many do you need to take for it to be dangerous?" The woman, identified only by her surname Kim, has admitted to mixing prescribed benzodiazepine-based sedatives into the drinks of the victims.

Investigation Uncovers Chilling Details and Prior Incidents

Kim reportedly told police that she did not expect the combination of alcohol and drugs to be fatal. However, investigators have stated she was "fully aware that consuming alcohol together with drugs could result in death," as quoted in the BBC report. She was initially taken into custody on February 11 on the less severe charge of inflicting bodily injury resulting in death, after two men died and a third was left unconscious following separate encounters with her at motels. The investigation has since escalated to murder charges.

Police accounts included in the report detail the alleged incidents:

  • The first incident occurred on January 28 in Suyu-dong, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, where Kim checked into a motel with a man in his 20s. She departed alone about two hours later, and the man was found dead in the room the next day.
  • On February 9, a second man in his 20s was murdered in a similar manner at a different motel within the same locality.
  • Investigators also suspect a prior attempted attack in Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province, in December of last year, where Kim allegedly offered her ex-partner a sedative-laced drink in a café parking lot, rendering him unconscious.

Escalation of Dosages and Ongoing Investigation

Authorities claim that Kim began to formulate her drinks with more potent dosages of the medication after her first victim regained consciousness, indicating a deliberate escalation in her actions. The investigation is currently ongoing, with a focus on identifying any additional victims who may have been targeted. This case highlights a chilling use of technology in premeditated crimes, raising questions about the ethical implications of AI tools like ChatGPT in such contexts. The legal proceedings are expected to continue as more evidence is gathered.
