K-Electric Shutdown Disrupts Karachi Water Supply

K-Electric's forced power shutdown at the Dhabeji pumping station has severely disrupted water supply across Karachi, leaving several areas facing shortages. According to a spokesperson for the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), K-Electric carried out an emergency shutdown at the Dhabeji grid's power transformer number 1 around 6:30pm on May 30 to address a critical technical fault. As a result, 10 out of 21 pumping units at the station were shut down, significantly affecting the city's water distribution system.

Impact on Water Supply

The shutdown has caused partial to complete suspension of water supply in several neighbourhoods. KWSC officials warned that the prolonged outage has further strained the already burdened water distribution network. Citizens have been urged to use water sparingly until normal supply is restored.

Response and Coordination

The spokesperson said K-Electric had initially informed KWSC of only a one-hour shutdown for maintenance work. However, electricity has not yet been fully restored, and no clear timeline has been provided for resumption of power. KWSC said it is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with K-Electric for the earliest possible restoration of pumping operations.
