Parliamentary Panels Push for Potato Support, Juice Safety

The National Assembly Standing Committee on National Food Security, chaired by Syed Hussain Tariq, reviewed issues related to potato production, exports, food quality, and development projects. Members voiced concern over heavy losses incurred by potato farmers due to poor prices and export delays. Committee member Rana Muhammad Hayat stated that potato growers had suffered enormous financial losses, alleging the government failed to provide timely support.

Russia Agrees to Register Pakistani Potato Exporters

The food security secretary informed the committee that Russia had agreed to register Pakistani exporters for potato imports and that all legal formalities between the two countries had been completed. The director general of plant protection said Russia would register more than 100 exporters, a move expected to boost potato exports and alleviate growers' losses.

Senate Committee Focuses on Fruit Juice Safety

Meanwhile, the Senate Standing Committee on National Food Security examined standards for fruit juices and consumer safety. The food security secretary reported that a study by the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) found excessive consumption of fruit juices could be harmful to health. He emphasized that juice cartons should clearly display information about chemicals used, their effects, and safe consumption limits.

The secretary added, "The Ministry of Health has also reported health risks associated with excessive consumption of fruit juices and warned that cheaper flavoured drinks posed greater risks." Committee members questioned the absence of uniform standards. Officials stated that PSQCA had yet to finalize comprehensive standards, while the Punjab Food Authority proposed that fruit juices should contain at least 10 per cent fruit pulp and carry complete labeling information.

Impact on Agricultural Planning and Export Opportunities

The committees pressed the ministry to improve agricultural planning and accelerate export opportunities to prevent future losses for potato growers. The development is seen as a step toward tighter food safety regulations and better market access for Pakistani agricultural products.
