The Punjab Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, has given the green light for the establishment of the Institute of Surgical, Orthopaedic and Medical Rehabilitation, along with Children's Hospital-IV, as part of the Nawaz Sharif Medical District initiative. During a meeting, the chief minister also approved the construction of multiple specialized facilities, including a Plastic Reconstructive Surgery and Burn Centre, an Institute of Genetic and Blood Diseases, a Centre of Excellence for Nursing and Midwifery, an Institute of Ophthalmology, and an Infectious Diseases Hospital within the medical city.
Seven Hospitals in Phased Development
Under the approved plan, seven major hospitals with a combined capacity of 1,519 beds will be developed in phases. The meeting also reviewed the potential for public-private partnerships (PPP) in 110 proposed development projects across Punjab. According to an official statement, the chief minister expressed satisfaction that the Punjab Public-Private Partnership Authority has become fully operational after 19 years.
Student Hostels and Infrastructure Projects
A proposal to establish student hostels under the PPP model for the first time in the province was also discussed. Additionally, projects related to roads, truck and bus stands, model bazaars, and food streets were reviewed. The participants were informed that four projects under the PPP framework have already become operational, feasibility studies for 27 schemes have been completed, and work on more projects is progressing.
Key Chief Minister's Initiatives
Officials highlighted that four major chief minister's initiatives are included in the PPP plan: a vaccine production plant in the medical district, the Lahore Time Travel Park, shrimp farming, and the Chiniot mines-to-metal project. The chief minister emphasized that the objective of the model is to promote private-sector participation in development, and assured that completion of projects envisaged under the framework would be ensured.
