Survey Reveals $1.38 Billion in Building Damage
A joint survey by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Lebanon's National Council for Scientific Research (CNRS) estimates direct damage to buildings in south Lebanon from the latest Israel-Hezbollah war at approximately $1.38 billion. The assessment, released on Monday, June 22, 2026, compared satellite imagery from late April 2026—nearly two months into the conflict—with images from October 2025.
Extent of Destruction
The survey found that 11,095 buildings were completely destroyed, affecting 17,891 housing units. Additionally, 2,242 buildings sustained partial damage, and 9,311 buildings incurred minor damage. The total number of damaged buildings stands at 22,648, with the majority located in southern Lebanon.
Impact on Housing and Infrastructure
The destruction has displaced thousands of residents, with entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble. The UNDP and CNRS noted that the damage assessment is ongoing and may increase as more data becomes available. The $1.38 billion figure covers only structural damage to buildings and does not include losses to infrastructure, businesses, or personal property.
