Urgent Need for Tree Plantation in Pakistan Cities

The pressing need for large-scale tree plantation in Pakistan's cities and towns has been highlighted by Javeria Younus in a letter from Singanisar. Climate change, rapid urbanisation, and deforestation are causing temperatures to rise and air quality to deteriorate at an alarming rate.

The Role of Trees in Environmental Protection

Trees play a vital role in combating environmental degradation. A mature tree absorbs significant amounts of carbon dioxide while releasing oxygen and filtering harmful pollutants from the atmosphere. Urban green spaces also reduce temperatures, mitigate the urban heat island effect, and improve public health.

Declining Tree Cover in Pakistan

Expanding construction and shrinking green spaces have reduced tree cover across many parts of Pakistan. This has resulted in hotter summers, worsening air pollution, and greater vulnerability to climate-related disasters. The situation is exacerbated by the loss of forests and green areas in urban centres.

Government and Community Action Needed

The government should launch extensive tree plantation campaigns, protect existing forests, and encourage community participation. Educational institutions, businesses, and citizens must also contribute by planting and maintaining trees in their neighbourhoods. Planting trees today is an investment in a healthier, greener, and more sustainable future for generations to come.

In a related development, five officials of the Sindh Food Department were dismissed from service over misappropriation, underscoring the need for accountability in public service.
