Chiniot Naib Tehsildar Accused of Illegal Detention

A disturbing incident in Tehsil and District Chiniot has brought to light allegations of official misconduct involving a Naib Tehsildar. According to a complaint filed by Muhammad Javed Shah of Chak No. 144-JB, the Naib Tehsildar, accompanied by subordinate staff and private individuals, entered his home without notice or legal authorisation. The complainant alleges that the officials trespassed onto his property, humiliated family members, and forcibly took away his underage son, who is a law student.

Allegations of Forced Payment and Abuse

The complaint states that the student was unlawfully detained and released only after a payment of Rs70,000 was made. It is further alleged that the student suffered physical and psychological abuse during the detention. Such actions, if proven, would constitute a grave abuse of public office and a violation of constitutional rights relating to dignity, liberty, and due process.

Complaints Filed with Multiple Authorities

Muhammad Javed Shah has sought the registration of an FIR against three revenue officials and two others. Complaints have been submitted to the District Police Officer, the Chief Secretary under the PEEDA Act 2006, the Anti-Corruption Establishment under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1947, and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, all demanding an independent inquiry.

Broader Context of Official Misconduct

The abuse of official authority by public servants remains a serious challenge to the rule of law in Pakistan. Officials entrusted with serving the public must exercise their powers responsibly, yet allegations of unlawful interference and misuse of authority continue to emerge. The government must ensure a prompt, impartial, and transparent investigation to maintain public confidence in state institutions.

Call for Accountability

Public confidence in state institutions depends on the assurance that no official is above the law. The incident in Chiniot highlights the need for strict accountability mechanisms to prevent such abuses. As the case unfolds, all eyes are on the authorities to deliver justice and uphold the rule of law.
