The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued warnings on Thursday regarding rain, thunderstorms, and potential flash flooding across several parts of the country, even as hot and humid conditions persist in major urban centers.
Rain Forecast and Affected Areas
The PMD has predicted rainfall in Islamabad, parts of Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), Sindh, and Balochistan between June 11 and June 13. Hailstorms may also occur in some areas during this period.
Flash Flood and Landslide Risks
The NDMA warned that thunderstorms and heavy rain could trigger flash floods in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B), K-P, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). Mountain streams and seasonal waterways may experience a surge in water levels. Areas at risk include Chitral, Shangla, Kohistan, Battagram, and Mansehra in K-P; Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Bagh, and Rawalakot in AJK; and Gupis-Yasin, Ghizer, Diamer, Tangir, Darel, and Gilgit districts in G-B. Additionally, a landslide alert has been issued for G-B and adjoining mountainous areas from June 12 to June 15, with possible temporary road closures on the Karakoram Highway and Jaglot-Skardu Road.
Precautionary Measures
The NDMA advised residents in low-lying areas and near waterways to take precautionary measures. Tourists and travelers were urged to avoid unnecessary travel to mountainous regions during heavy rainfall.
Heat Conditions in Urban Centers
Lahore is expected to remain hot, with a maximum temperature of 41°C and a minimum of 31°C. Winds will blow at around 13 km/h, and humidity at 51% may maintain muggy conditions. Karachi will experience hot and humid weather with bright sunshine, a maximum temperature of 39-41°C, and humidity levels of 78%, making it feel around 40°C. Southwesterly winds are blowing at 22 km/h. Authorities advised residents to avoid direct sunlight and take precautions.
