The Government of Pakistan has announced a significant reduction in petroleum product prices, bringing relief to consumers. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday declared a decrease of Rs74 per liter in petrol prices and Rs67 per liter in high-speed diesel (HSD). This move aims to transfer the benefits of declining international oil prices to the public.
Official Notification Pending
The official notification for the revised petroleum prices has not yet been issued. However, the announcement comes a day after Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik stated that Prime Minister Shehbaz directed authorities to immediately pass on the benefit of falling global oil prices to consumers, amid easing tensions in the Middle East.
Context of the Price Reduction
The decision follows a period of high fuel costs that have strained household budgets and business operations. The government’s action is expected to provide substantial relief, particularly for transportation and agriculture sectors that rely heavily on diesel. The reduction also aligns with global market trends, where crude oil prices have softened due to improved supply outlooks and reduced geopolitical risks.
Authorities are expected to release the formal notification soon, which will outline the effective date and the exact revised rates. Consumers are advised to stay tuned for official updates from the Ministry of Petroleum.
