The Public Prosecutor's Office in Mutsamudu confirmed the death and injuries in a statement on Saturday, describing the event as tragic. The incident occurred in the Mpage area of Anjouan. The clashes erupted on Friday following a meeting between the mayor of Mirontsy and the fishermen's association, which has been on strike since Wednesday to protest the increasing fuel costs.
Protest Actions
Roads were blocked with stones in Mutsamudu, the capital of Anjouan, and a judicial investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances of the death. The unrest is part of a broader strike that began on Monday after the government raised diesel prices by 46 percent and gasoline prices by 35 percent, citing the ongoing Middle East conflict.
Transport workers and shopkeepers have paralyzed public transportation in the capital, Moroni. According to the National Human Rights Commission, 39 people have been detained since the start of the strike.
