The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning that heatwave conditions are expected to affect Lahore and most parts of Punjab from June 8 to June 11, with temperatures likely to rise significantly above normal levels.

Temperature Forecast

According to the Met Office, maximum temperatures in Lahore and several central and southern Punjab districts are expected to remain 5°C to 7°C above normal, ranging between 44°C and 48°C. The affected districts include Lahore, Okara, Kasur, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Sahiwal, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Khanewal, Pakpattan, Rahim Yar Khan, Rajanpur, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Bhakkar, Layyah, and Kot Addu.

Cause of Heatwave

The PMD stated that a high-pressure system developing in the upper atmosphere from June 8 is likely to intensify the heatwave across the country through June 12. In northern Punjab, including Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, and Gujrat, temperatures are forecast to rise to between 41°C and 44°C from June 8 to June 10.

Other Regions

Elsewhere in the country, temperatures may soar to 48°C to 51°C in parts of Sindh and Balochistan, including Sukkur, Jacobabad, Larkana, Dadu, Turbat, and Panjgur. Karachi is also expected to experience very hot weather, with temperatures ranging between 40°C and 43°C during the forecast period.

Night Temperatures and Dust Storms

The PMD warned that night temperatures are also likely to remain unusually high. Isolated dust storms may occur in southern Punjab and Sindh due to intense heating.

Advisory

Authorities have advised the public, particularly children, women, and senior citizens, to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight between 10am and 4pm and to ensure adequate hydration. Farmers have been urged to take necessary measures to protect crops and livestock. All concerned departments have been directed to remain vigilant during the heatwave.
