Ewing Hall Heritage to Be Preserved in Original Form

LAHORE: The Lahore Heritage Areas Revival Board (LHAR) has confirmed that the historic Ewing Hall in Anarkali will be preserved in its original architectural form. This assurance comes amid concerns raised by Forman Christian College University alumni, community members, and civil society groups after the Punjab government decided to reclaim the building.

Background of the Dispute

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) had voiced reservations, calling for transparent consultations regarding the future of the building, which holds both historical and minority heritage significance. In response, the LHAR clarified that Ewing Hall was originally leased in 1915 for use as a student hostel. However, it has remained vacant since 2015 and is no longer serving its intended educational purpose.

Unpaid Rent and Legal Process

According to the board, unpaid rent owed to the government has accumulated to over Rs100 million despite repeated reminders and notices. The Punjab Board of Revenue issued a show-cause notice in March this year, providing all stakeholders an opportunity to present their positions. After hearing submissions from the educational institution and the Higher Education Department, the member colonies ordered the repossession of the property in favor of the provincial government on April 27.

The LHAR emphasized that the decision was neither abrupt nor unilateral but resulted from a legal process spanning several years. The board reiterated its commitment to preserving the heritage structure while ensuring compliance with legal obligations.
