Lahore Heritage Board Clarifies Ewing Hall Preservation

The Lahore Heritage Areas Revival (LHAR) Board on Sunday clarified its position regarding Ewing Hall in Anarkali, stating that the historic building would be preserved and restored rather than demolished, while emphasizing that recent actions concerning the property were taken in accordance with legal procedures.

Background and Legal Process

In a press release issued here, the board said it wished to share important facts with the public in response to concerns arising from recent reports about Ewing Hall, acknowledging the emotional and historical significance of Forman Christian College (FCC) for many people.

According to the statement, Ewing Hall had originally been leased in 1915 for use as a student hostel. However, the building had remained vacant and unused for its original educational purpose since 2015. During this period, outstanding rent liabilities accumulated to more than Rs107 million, despite repeated reminders and notices issued by the relevant authorities.

The board stated that the Board of Revenue Punjab issued a formal show-cause notice in March 2026 and provided all concerned parties with an opportunity to present their case. Following hearings involving representatives of Forman Christian College and the Higher Education Department, the Member (Colonies) passed an order on April 27, 2026, resuming the land in favour of the provincial government. The LHAR Board emphasized that the decision was neither abrupt nor arbitrary but was the result of a lengthy legal process carried out in accordance with applicable laws and procedures.

Commitment to Preservation

Addressing public concerns, the board categorically stated that there were no plans to demolish Ewing Hall. It noted that both the LHAR Board and the Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) were mandated to protect, conserve and restore heritage sites rather than remove them. The statement described Ewing Hall as an important and beautiful component of Lahore’s architectural and cultural heritage, adding that the building would be restored to its original form in line with restoration projects undertaken by the authorities in other heritage areas of the city.

“The building will be preserved and its historical legacy will be respected,” the board stated.

Respect for Institutions and Communities

The LHAR Board also expressed its respect for Forman Christian College and its longstanding contribution to education and public service in Pakistan. It further acknowledged the sentiments of minority communities and others who regard the institution as an important part of their heritage and identity. The board reiterated that the action taken was related solely to legal and administrative matters concerning the maintenance and preservation of a neglected heritage structure and should not be viewed as targeting any institution or community. It assured stakeholders that it remained committed to transparency, constructive dialogue and engagement with all concerned parties in a spirit of mutual respect and goodwill.
