Actor Justin Baldoni and his wife, Emily, have spoken publicly for the first time about the trauma their family endured during the prolonged legal dispute with co-star Blake Lively. In a video released on Instagram on Wednesday, the couple addressed the emotional toll of the lawsuit, which stemmed from the 2024 film It Ends With Us.
Background of the Legal Dispute
In May, Lively and Baldoni settled a lawsuit that had been ongoing since December 2024. The lawsuit alleged that Baldoni sexually harassed Lively on set and later launched a retaliatory smear campaign against her. A judge dismissed Lively’s harassment claims, but she pursued retaliation allegations, which were eventually settled. The case drew significant media attention and highlighted issues of respectful treatment on film sets.
Baldoni filed a $400 million counter-lawsuit against Lively and her husband, actor Ryan Reynolds, accusing them of defamation and extortion. The legal battle involved a series of accusations and counter-accusations, creating a contentious public narrative.
Public Remarks and Emotional Impact
In the nearly five-minute video, Baldoni and his wife smiled and chuckled at times, but their words conveyed deep pain. “There have been so many painful things that have been spoken into existence over the last couple years,” Baldoni said. He noted that they had not spoken publicly for nearly two years, not because they lacked things to say, but because of the difficulty in doing so.
Emily Baldoni added, “There has been a lot of trauma for us to move through as a family, which also makes it hard to speak.” She explained that the resolution of the case seemed like the right time to break their silence. “The truth and the facts have spoken for themselves and here we are,” she said.
Reflections on the Experience
The couple expressed confusion and pain over how the situation unfolded. “We’ve had to wrestle with so many things and try to understand so many things, like how could something like this even happen? Let alone disguised as a fight for women,” Baldoni said.
Lively had previously stated that the case was about ensuring respectful treatment on set. The settlement brought an end to a contentious chapter, but the Baldonis indicated that the emotional scars remain.
