Iran's imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has been urgently transferred from prison to a hospital in northwestern Iran after a “catastrophic deterioration” of her health, her foundation said Friday.
Health Crisis Details
The Narges Mohammadi Foundation reported that the Nobel Prize laureate experienced two episodes of complete loss of consciousness and a severe cardiac crisis. Earlier Friday, Mohammadi fainted twice in prison in Zanjan, northwestern Iran, according to the foundation.
She was believed to have suffered a heart attack in late March, based on accounts from her lawyers who visited her a few days after the incident. At that time, she appeared pale, had lost weight, and required a nurse to assist her with walking.
Systematic Medical Neglect Alleged
The hospital transfer occurs “after 140 days of systematic medical neglect” since her arrest on Dec. 12, the foundation stated. The organization has raised concerns about the lack of adequate medical care provided to Mohammadi during her detention.
Mohammadi, a prominent Iranian human rights activist, has been a vocal advocate for women's rights and political prisoners in Iran. Her health condition has drawn international attention, with calls for her immediate release and access to proper medical treatment.
