LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Sunday underscored the critical importance of early diagnosis, timely treatment, and public awareness in the fight against brain tumors. She stated that increased awareness can save lives and reduce complications associated with the disease.
World Brain Tumor Day Message
In a message issued on World Brain Tumor Day, the chief minister expressed solidarity with patients suffering from brain tumors and prayed for their speedy recovery. She also paid tribute to healthcare professionals, caregivers, and organizations working tirelessly to treat and support patients battling the disease.
Silent Yet Devastating Illness
Describing brain tumors as a silent yet devastating illness, Maryam Nawaz said the condition poses not only a serious medical challenge but also places immense emotional and psychological strain on patients and their families. She emphasized that timely diagnosis and access to quality healthcare remain crucial for improving treatment outcomes and ensuring a healthier life for patients.
“Public awareness is the most effective weapon against silent diseases,” she said, adding that greater understanding of the symptoms, risks, and treatment options associated with brain tumors can significantly improve survival rates and quality of life. She stressed that early detection and prompt medical intervention are essential to preventing complications and reducing mortality.
Government Initiatives
The chief minister said the Punjab government was committed to strengthening healthcare services under its “Healthy Punjab” vision and ensuring the availability of advanced treatment facilities for brain tumors and other neurological disorders in public hospitals across the province. Highlighting ongoing healthcare initiatives, she said Pakistan’s first government-run Nawaz Sharif Cancer Hospital would serve as a major source of hope for cancer and brain tumor patients. She added that free treatment would be provided to cancer patients at all stages of the disease through the Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cancer.
Maryam Nawaz further announced that the Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cancer and Research Centre would soon become fully operational, expanding access to specialized diagnosis, treatment, and research facilities. She also noted that efforts were underway to enhance the capacity and expertise of medical professionals to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and management of brain tumor patients, ensuring better healthcare outcomes across Punjab.
Reaffirming her government’s commitment to public health, the chief minister said every possible step was being taken to provide state-of-the-art healthcare services and support patients suffering from life-threatening illnesses.
