The Palestine Red Crescent Society successfully evacuated 33 patients and their 40 companions from the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, enabling them to receive critical medical care in Egypt. This operation was conducted in coordination with the World Health Organization (WHO), as reported by the Palestine News Agency (Wafa).
Details of the Evacuation
The group departed from the Medical Rehabilitation Hospital and crossed through the Rafah border crossing. The patients, suffering from various severe conditions, will now access advanced treatment unavailable in Gaza due to the ongoing conflict.
Healthcare Crisis in Gaza
The Palestinian healthcare system has been severely strained, lacking essential supplies and equipment. Since the start of Israel's military campaign in 2023, medical facilities in Gaza have lost 76 percent of their imaging equipment. Israel has imposed restrictions on the entry of medical and humanitarian supplies, including items such as crutches, ventilators, ultrasound machines, oxygen cylinders, and even children's toys, citing potential dual-use concerns.
Broader Conflict Impact
International organizations have accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, where over 72,000 people have been killed. The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for several Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on charges of war crimes.
This evacuation highlights the dire humanitarian situation and the urgent need for sustained medical assistance for the people of Gaza.
