Thailand Imposes 21-Day Ebola Quarantine for DRC, Uganda Travelers

Thailand has implemented a mandatory 21-day quarantine for all individuals traveling from or transiting through the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda, as the Ebola outbreak in these regions intensifies. The measure, announced on Tuesday by Thailand's public health ministry, aims to prevent the spread of the deadly virus within the country.

Ebola Outbreak Situation

The eastern DRC remains the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak, which has prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare an international health alert. Since the outbreak was officially declared on May 15, the DRC's health ministry has reported 204 deaths and 867 suspected cases. In Uganda, one death has been confirmed, with six additional cases of infection.

Quarantine Requirements

According to the public health ministry's statement, travelers exhibiting symptoms of Ebola infection must be quarantined for at least 21 days at a designated state hospital. Those without symptoms will be required to stay at an unspecified quarantine site for the same duration. Senior public health ministry official Somlerk Jeungsmarn noted that while Thailand has not yet reported any Ebola-affected travelers, the risk remains due to global population movement.

Understanding Ebola

Ebola is a severe viral disease transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids, leading to symptoms such as high fever, internal bleeding, and organ failure. The WHO has recorded 10 confirmed Ebola deaths and 220 suspected deaths in the DRC since mid-May, along with approximately 900 suspected cases. Experts believe the actual spread of the virus may be more extensive than currently reported, as it may have been circulating undetected for some time.
