Three vaccination camps have been established in the remote mountainous areas of Upper Kohistan district, bringing essential immunisation and healthcare services to underserved communities and helping protect children against vaccine-preventable diseases. Organised at Sachoi, Thoki and Gujjar Bond in Gabar Nala (Goshali), around 24 kilometres east of Komila Bazaar off the Karakoram Highway, the initiative targeted communities living in isolated terrain with limited access to healthcare facilities.

According to Dr Munib, team leader of the HUJRA Village Support Organisation (HVSO), the camps were arranged with the support of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Department and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to improve immunisation coverage and raise awareness about routine vaccination among children and pregnant women. Residents of Gabar Nala are dispersed across rugged mountainous areas, where difficult geographical conditions often hinder access to basic health services. Health workers administered vaccines in accordance with the national immunisation schedule and provided guidance on disease prevention, maternal health and child healthcare.

A total of 127 children were vaccinated during the campaign, including 27 identified as zero-dose children who had not previously received routine immunisation. Special emphasis was placed on protecting children against measles and other vaccine-preventable illnesses. The camps also offered outpatient services and general medical examinations. In all, 98 patients received treatment and screening for common ailments, including fever, diarrhoea and skin infections. Routine Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) vaccines were administered to children under the age of five and pregnant women. Essential medicines, including deworming tablets, iron and folic acid supplements, and oral rehydration salts (ORS), were distributed free of charge.

Prior to the initiative, community mobilisation campaigns were conducted to encourage participation. Parents and caregivers responded positively, bringing children for vaccination while attending awareness sessions on the importance of completing immunisation schedules. Around 20 awareness sessions were held during the campaign, focusing on the benefits of vaccination and addressing common myths and misconceptions surrounding immunisation. Local residents welcomed the initiative, saying it had improved access to healthcare services in an area where medical facilities remain difficult to reach.

Health officials said the camps represented an important effort to expand routine immunisation coverage in hard-to-reach communities and reduce the risk of disease outbreaks among vulnerable populations.
