Liaquat University Hospital (LUH) has imposed a medical emergency until June 28 in preparation for the days of Ashura, according to a hospital spokesman. The announcement was made on Saturday, detailing measures to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services during the religious observances.
Leaves Cancelled and Round-the-Clock Services Ordered
Medical Superintendent Dr. Syed Irshad Hussain Kazmi has cancelled all leaves for doctors, nurses, and paramedics. The staff has been directed to provide round-the-clock medical services at the hospital, the spokesman added.
The emergency declaration applies to both the Hyderabad and Jamshoro branches of LUH. Medical teams and ambulances will be deployed in the field on the 9th and 10th days of Muharram along the routes of processions to ensure immediate response to any incidents.
Background and Significance of Ashura
Ashura, observed on the 10th of Muharram, commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala. Large processions are held across Pakistan, particularly in Hyderabad, drawing thousands of participants. The heightened security and medical preparedness aim to address potential emergencies such as stampedes, heatstroke, or violence.
LUH's proactive measures reflect the hospital's commitment to public safety during this period of intense religious activity.
