The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a forecast for the onset of monsoon rains across Punjab starting July 1, with wet weather expected to persist until July 6. According to the PDMA spokesperson, rainfall is likely in most districts of the province, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Faisalabad, Khushab, Sargodha, Sheikhupura, Narowal, Sahiwal, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Pakpattan, Nankana Sahib, Okara, Kasur, Noorpur Thal, Bhakkar, Layyah, Mianwali, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Khanewal, and Lodhran, along with surrounding areas.
Urban Flooding Risk in Major Cities
The PDMA has warned of a significant risk of urban flooding in Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Lahore, and Faisalabad during the forecast period. These cities are particularly vulnerable due to their drainage infrastructure, and residents are advised to prepare for potential waterlogging.
CM Maryam Directs High Alert
In response to the expected weather conditions, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed all commissioners and deputy commissioners across the province to remain on high alert. The directive aims to ensure swift response to any emergencies that may arise from the heavy rains.
Safety Precautions for Residents
The PDMA has advised residents to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid open areas during lightning, and remain cautious during dust storms and strong winds. Tourists travelling to northern areas have also been urged to take necessary precautions. Citizens are encouraged to contact the PDMA Emergency Helpline 1129 in case of any emergency.
Additional Provincial Measures
In a separate development, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has ordered a strict crackdown on wheat hoarding and profiteering to prevent artificial shortages in the province. The move is part of broader efforts to stabilize food supplies and prices during the monsoon season.
