The World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Wednesday that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is spreading faster than containment efforts, with frontline health workers facing serious security threats in volatile regions.
Outbreak Details and Scale
The outbreak of the rare Bundibugyo strain has infected more than 1,000 people in Congo and 20 in neighboring Uganda, making it the largest first-month outbreak for any Ebola epidemic. Health experts believe the virus circulated undetected for months before authorities declared the outbreak on May 15.
Response Challenges
WHO officials stated that response teams are struggling to keep pace due to the rapid spread and security risks. Health workers operate in some of the country's most unstable areas, facing violence that hampers vaccination and treatment efforts.
Regional Impact
The outbreak has also affected Uganda, with 20 confirmed cases. Cross-border surveillance and coordination are critical to preventing further spread. The WHO continues to support both countries in containment measures.
