ECC Greenlights Gas Connection Plan for Villages Near Production Sites

The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has given its approval for a significant initiative to extend gas connections to areas situated within a five-kilometre radius of gas production sites. This decision was announced after a meeting chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, highlighting the government's commitment to improving energy access in rural communities.

Key Approvals and Financial Allocations

In addition to the gas connection scheme, the ECC sanctioned a supplementary grant of Rs 13.1 million specifically for the Petroleum Division. Under the approved plan, a substantial allocation of Rs3 billion will be dedicated to providing gas supply to villages located near gas-producing regions. This project is set to be implemented through Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), ensuring efficient execution and coverage.

Other notable financial approvals include:

  • Rs200 million to clear outstanding dues for teachers under the Basic Education Community Schools (BECS) programme, with adjustments in minimum wages as per court directives.
  • Rs3.5 billion allocated for monsoon operations and international humanitarian assistance efforts.
  • Over Rs1 billion for the Power Division's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Achievement Programme.
  • Rs1.47 billion for public awareness campaigns under the Ministry of Information, with instructions for the ministry to submit a follow-up summary for remaining funds in the next quarter.

Comprehensive Reforms in the Power Sector

The ECC also endorsed comprehensive reform packages aimed at reducing electricity generation costs and addressing the persistent issue of circular debt in the power sector. These measures are expected to enhance efficiency and sustainability in energy production and distribution across the country.

This series of approvals underscores the ECC's multifaceted approach to addressing critical infrastructure, education, and humanitarian needs while pushing forward with essential reforms in key economic sectors.
