PM Shehbaz Vows Transparency in PIA Privatisation, Reiterates Dialogue Offer
PM Shehbaz on PIA Privatisation Transparency, Political Dialogue

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has declared the government's unwavering commitment to a fully transparent process for the privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), terming it one of the most significant financial transactions in the nation's history. He simultaneously renewed his call for political dialogue with all parties, including the PTI, to foster national stability and progress.

A Landmark Transaction with Unprecedented Openness

Addressing the federal cabinet meeting on Tuesday, the Prime Minister laid out meticulous plans to ensure the integrity of the PIA sale. The bidding process will involve sealed bids placed in see-through boxes, with the entire event broadcast live on television for public scrutiny. He emphasized that the bid envelopes would remain sealed until after the price determination phase, with the final award going to the highest bidder through a competitive process.

"This entire process had to be made transparent and credible because Pakistan is moving towards one of its biggest transactions," PM Shehbaz stated. He expressed confidence that a successful completion of this bidding would catalyze further private sector participation in the economy. The cabinet's collective wisdom will be sought, as the final outcome of the bidding process will be presented to them for approval.

Dialogue for Stability, But Not Under Duress

On the political front, the Prime Minister reiterated his consistent offer of talks to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and other political stakeholders. He affirmed the government's readiness for engagement if the opposition is serious. However, he set a clear boundary, stating that dialogue cannot advance under the shadow of illegality or blackmail.

"Talks can move forward in the light of legitimate demands and constitutional principles," he asserted, highlighting that harmony among political forces is indispensable for the country's development and prosperity. He concluded by reaffirming that national interest remains the supreme guiding principle for all government decisions, especially those concerning economic reform and political stability.

Recognizing National Achievements

During the cabinet session, PM Shehbaz also took moments to celebrate national accomplishments. He congratulated the nation on Pakistan's victory in the Under-19 Asia Cup, calling it a proud moment. Furthermore, he referenced the recent conferment of the prestigious King Abdulaziz Award upon a Pakistani field marshal in Saudi Arabia, stating that such an honour reflects the collective dignity and standing of the entire Pakistani nation, not just an individual.

The Prime Minister appreciated the diligent efforts of the relevant ministries, specifically commending the Deputy Prime Minister, the Defence Minister, and the Finance Minister, for advancing the complex privatisation agenda. He described the day as significant for PIA's future and expressed optimism that a transparent process would bolster economic management and public confidence.
