The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Thursday that 287 candidates are being considered for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, with US President Donald Trump likely among the nominees. Kristian Berg Harpviken, secretary of the committee, revealed that the list includes 208 individuals and 79 organizations, noting a significant renewal in nominations compared to previous years.
Renewal and Relevance of the Peace Prize
Harpviken, who assumed the role in January 2025, expressed surprise at the annual turnover of nominees. Despite global conflicts and strained international cooperation, he emphasized the enduring importance of the award. "The Peace Prize is even more important in a period like the one we're living in," he said, adding that there is as much good work as ever, if not more.
Trump's Nomination Status
Leaders from Cambodia, Israel, and Pakistan have stated they nominated Trump for this year's prize. Their nominations, if submitted, would have been made in spring or summer 2025, meeting the January 31 deadline. However, nominations remain confidential for 50 years, and Harpviken declined to confirm Trump's inclusion. A nomination does not imply endorsement by the award body.
Thousands of individuals worldwide can propose names, including government and parliament members, heads of state, university professors, and former laureates. Betting sites list potential candidates such as Russia's Yulia Navalnaya, Pope Leo, and Sudan's Emergency Response Rooms.
Concern for Jailed Iranian Laureate
The committee expressed deep concern for the health of 2023 laureate Narges Mohammadi, an Iranian human rights activist who suffered a heart attack in prison. Her supporters warned her life is in imminent danger. Harpviken noted alarming reports after her sister visited her in prison, urging Iranian authorities to release her for proper medical treatment.
Other Possible Nominees
Possible nominees include US Senator Lisa Murkowski and Danish MP Aaja Chemnitz, nominated by Norwegian lawmaker Lars Haltbrekken for their work on Arctic peace and trust-building. This region has gained attention due to Trump's push to acquire Greenland from Denmark.
The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize winner will be announced on October 9, with the ceremony on December 10. Last year's laureate was Venezuela's Maria Corina Machado.
