Police in Northern Ireland have declared a security alert in the town of Dunmurry, on the outskirts of Belfast, following reports that a car bomb exploded near a police station. The Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed on Sunday that homes in the vicinity have been evacuated, and members of the public are advised to avoid the area.
Political Reaction
Sorcha Eastwood, a UK Parliament member representing Lagan Valley, expressed distress over the incident. “It is distressing and disturbing to wake up to the news that a car bomb exploded outside Dunmurry police station last night,” she said. “A busy area, a car bomb left outside residential housing, small businesses and any number of people out and about on a Saturday night working or socialising. It is only through the grace of God that there are no casualties.”
Investigation Ongoing
Police have not released any information regarding the motive for the attack. The explosion occurred late Saturday night, and forensic investigators were seen inspecting the scene on Sunday. Authorities are urging the public to stay away from the area as the investigation continues.
Previous Incident in Lurgan
Last month, a similar attempted attack took place at a police station in Lurgan, approximately 20 miles southwest of Dunmurry. In that incident, two masked men stopped a delivery driver, placed a “crude but viable” improvised bomb in the trunk of his car, and forced him at gunpoint to drive the device to the police station. Police carried out a controlled explosion after evacuating around 100 homes. Authorities stated that the Lurgan attack was likely carried out by dissident Republican groups in a “pathetic attempt to remain relevant and provoke fear.”
Context of Violence
The 1998 Good Friday Agreement largely ended decades of violence between Republican groups opposed to British rule and those who want to maintain the region’s ties to the United Kingdom. However, dissident groups that oppose the peace process still carry out sporadic attacks. The recent bombings highlight the ongoing security challenges in Northern Ireland.
