French coastal services rescued over a hundred migrants from the English Channel over the weekend as they attempted to cross to England, with one person rushed to hospital, officials reported on Sunday.
Rescue Operations
During a series of operations on Saturday, rescue teams on the northern coast of France saved 119 individuals who were trying to make the perilous journey across the Channel, according to Premar, France's maritime service for the region. In one particular rescue, a migrant who had lost consciousness was airlifted by helicopter to a hospital in Boulogne, located on the northern coast.
New UK-France Agreement
On Thursday, Britain and France signed a new three-year agreement aimed at preventing undocumented migrants from making the dangerous crossing in small boats. As part of the deal, London has increased its financial contributions to support French operations in combating illegal migration.
Migrant Deaths
In 2025, at least 29 migrants have died while attempting the crossing from northern France to southern England, according to an AFP count based on French and British official sources. So far this year, six people have lost their lives in similar attempts.
