Mass Shooting in Kyiv Leaves Six Dead, Gunman Neutralized by Police
A devastating mass shooting unfolded in Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, on Saturday, resulting in six fatalities and at least 14 individuals wounded. The gunman, armed with an automatic weapon, barricaded himself inside a supermarket with hostages before being shot and killed by police during a tactical operation.
President Zelensky Confirms Details of the Attack
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky provided critical updates on the incident, confirming that the assailant had been neutralized. "The attacker has been neutralized. He had taken hostages and, tragically, killed one of them. He also murdered four people on the street. Another woman died in the hospital due to severe injuries," Zelensky stated in an online video address.
Zelensky further revealed that the 58-year-old gunman was born in Russia and had a prior criminal record. "He had lived in the Donetsk region for a long period and was born in Russia," the president added, as authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the violence.
Chaos in Holosiivskyi District
The shooting occurred in Kyiv's bustling Holosiivskyi district, outside an apartment block and a nearby shopping center. This act of violence is particularly shocking given the wartime context following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with such incidents being unheard of in the capital during the conflict.
An Associated Press reporter at the scene witnessed victims' bodies covered with emergency blankets on the crowded street before they were removed. Bystanders fled for safety as the gunman opened fire, creating panic in the central district.
Police Operation and Hostage Negotiations
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko detailed the police response, explaining that special tactical units stormed the convenience store after attempts to negotiate with the gunman failed. "We tried to persuade him, knowing that there was likely a wounded person inside. We even offered to bring in tourniquets to stop the bleeding, but he did not respond," Klymenko said. "Consequently, the order was given to neutralize him."
During the 40-minute standoff, a female negotiator wearing body armor used a loudspeaker to appeal to the assailant from behind an armored vehicle. "The people are not to blame for this. Please let them go, and we will talk with you," she urged.
Attacker's Background and Preceding Actions
Authorities confirmed that the gunman had a valid weapon's permit. According to Zelensky, the attacker set fire to an apartment before taking to the streets armed. The Ukraine Security Service (SBU) has described the killings as an act of terrorism.
Several residents of the apartment block where the gunman lived recognized him. "I knew him by sight. He seemed like an educated, refined man. You'd never guess he was some kind of criminal," said 75-year-old Hanna Kulyk, a neighbor. "He didn't socialize much with people — just a greeting and he'd be on his way. He lived alone."
Casualties and Hospitalizations
In addition to the six confirmed deaths, at least 10 people were hospitalized with wounds and trauma from the shooting. The wounded received immediate medical attention and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
