Lebanon's President Aoun Outlines Goals for Talks with Israel to End Hostilities
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated on Monday that planned bilateral negotiations with Israel are designed to achieve a cessation of hostilities and the termination of Israeli occupation in southern Lebanon. In an official statement, Aoun emphasized that the talks will be spearheaded by former Lebanese ambassador to the United States, Simon Karam, and will operate independently from other diplomatic efforts in the region.
Objectives of the Negotiations
President Aoun clarified that the primary objectives of these negotiations include stopping all hostile actions, ending the Israeli occupation of southern Lebanese territories, and facilitating the deployment of the Lebanese army up to the internationally recognized southern borders with Israel. He stressed that this initiative is a sovereign Lebanese effort, with no external parties participating or substituting in the delegation's role.
Leadership and Independence of the Talks
The appointment of Simon Karam, a seasoned diplomat with experience in international relations, underscores Lebanon's commitment to a focused and autonomous negotiation process. Aoun highlighted that these talks will remain separate from broader Middle East peace discussions, such as those involving US-Iran diplomacy, ensuring that Lebanon's specific concerns are addressed directly and without interference.
This move comes amid ongoing regional tensions, with Lebanon seeking to assert its sovereignty and secure stability in its southern regions through diplomatic channels. The announcement has sparked discussions on the potential for de-escalation and long-term peace in the area.
