London Synagogue Targeted in Latest Arson Attack Amid Rising Anti-Semitic Violence
A synagogue in north London has become the latest Jewish target in a series of arson incidents plaguing the British capital in recent weeks, according to a charity that provides security to Britain's Jewish community. The Community Security Trust (CST) confirmed the attack on Sunday, highlighting a disturbing pattern of violence against Jewish institutions.
Details of the Kenton Synagogue Incident
The CST stated in an official release: "We are aware of another attempted arson, this time targeting a synagogue in north London, following similar recent incidents targeting the Jewish community in Finchley, Golders Green and Hendon." The attack occurred at the Kenton United Synagogue, resulting in minor smoke damage to an internal room. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, and no significant structural damage was sustained.
London police have not yet issued an immediate comment regarding this specific incident. However, the attack follows a troubling trend. On Friday night, an attempted arson attack targeted a business premises with links to the Jewish community. Just days earlier, authorities arrested two suspects in connection with an attempted arson attack on another synagogue in the capital.
Broader Context of Attacks and Security Concerns
This incident is part of a wider campaign of intimidation. Last month, several ambulances belonging to the Jewish volunteer emergency service Hatzola, which were parked near a synagogue in Golders Green, were deliberately set on fire. Additionally, the area around the Israeli embassy in London was recently cordoned off following an online report that it had been targeted with drones carrying "dangerous substances." Police later clarified that the items found did not contain any harmful or hazardous materials.
Britain's Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis expressed grave concern on social media platform X, stating: "Last night yet another synagogue, this time in Kenton, was targeted in a cowardly arson attack. A sustained campaign of violence and intimidation against the Jewish community of the UK is gathering momentum."
Claims of Responsibility and Police Response
The pro-Iranian group Harakat Ashab Al-Yamin al-Islamiyya, also known as the Movement of the Companions of the Right Hand of Islam, has claimed responsibility for most of these incidents. The group posted on social media, asserting it was behind the Kenton arson and shared a video purporting to show the attack. This organization has also declared responsibility for a spate of attacks across Europe targeting US, Israeli, and Jewish interests.
In response to the escalating threats, police announced on Saturday that they have bolstered their presence in the affected areas. This includes the deployment of armed response vehicles and resources from the counter-terrorism division. Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams, who leads policing in the region, emphasized in a statement: "We recognize the feeling of concern among local people and do not underestimate the impact of incidents of this nature – particularly our Jewish communities."
He further noted: "We continue to work with our colleagues from Counter Terrorism Policing who are leading the investigations into all of these incidents due to the similar circumstances and online claims of responsibility." The coordinated efforts aim to address the security challenges and prevent further violence against the Jewish community in London.
