Pakistan Advocates for Immediate Ceasefire and Dialogue in Ukraine at UN Security Council Meeting
As the Russia-Ukraine conflict marks its fifth year, Pakistan has issued a strong call for an immediate ceasefire and the swift resumption of peace negotiations, firmly stating that no military solution exists to end the prolonged hostilities. Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan's permanent representative to the United Nations, addressed the UN Security Council during a debate on the situation in Ukraine, underscoring the urgent need for sustained and meaningful dialogue to achieve a just and lasting peace.
Emphasis on Diplomacy and Human Suffering
Ambassador Ahmad reminded the council that Pakistan has consistently supported dialogue and diplomacy since the conflict's inception, which has inflicted severe consequences on affected populations, economies, and regions worldwide. He highlighted that the prolonged nature of the war has deepened international divisions, strained multilateral cooperation, and complicated efforts toward a peaceful resolution. The meeting, presided over by Christopher Landau, Deputy Secretary of State of the United States, which holds the March presidency of the 15-member body, focused on the escalating humanitarian crisis.
Civilians continue to bear the brunt of the conflict, with significant loss of life, widespread displacement, and extensive destruction of homes and critical infrastructure. Ambassador Ahmad stressed that the ongoing human suffering underscores the imperative to uphold human dignity, ensure civilian protection, and prioritize a peaceful settlement. He expressed regret that recent crises in the Middle East have further impacted the negotiation process for Ukraine, but expressed hope for an early resumption of talks.
Call for Constructive Engagement and UN Principles
The Pakistani envoy urged all parties to demonstrate genuine political will, build mutual understanding, and engage constructively to secure a negotiated settlement, starting with an immediate cessation of hostilities. He emphasized that achieving lasting peace requires a firm commitment to the principles and purposes of the UN Charter, along with a focus on finding mutually acceptable solutions that address the legitimate security interests of all sides. Pakistan pledged to continue supporting global initiatives aimed at bridging divides and promoting peaceful conflict resolution, always in adherence to international law and UN Charter principles.
Humanitarian Crisis and UN Relief Coordinator's Report
UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher provided a grim update, noting that civilian casualties in Ukraine have far exceeded levels from the previous year. Communities face relentless waves of drone and missile strikes, resulting in the destruction of homes, schools, and hospitals. As hostilities intensify along front-line areas, entire populations are being forced to flee, with children particularly affected by missed schooling, prolonged stress, and family separations.
Strikes on energy and vital infrastructure are severing civilians' access to basic survival needs, reflecting a sustained pattern of damage to essential systems. Fletcher urged the Security Council to insist on the protection of civilians and critical infrastructure, and to ensure safe, rapid, and unimpeded humanitarian access to all those in need. This call aligns with Pakistan's advocacy for a peaceful resolution to mitigate the escalating humanitarian toll.
