Qatar Commends Pakistan's Mediation in Middle East Crisis

Qatar's Premier Applauds Pakistan's Diplomatic Role in Middle East De-escalation

In a significant diplomatic development, Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani commended Pakistan on Saturday for its vigorous efforts to promote peace through dialogue and diplomacy in the Middle East. This praise came during a telephone conversation with Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, as regional tensions remain high following recent military actions.

Escalating Tensions Trigger Regional Diplomacy

The Middle East has witnessed a sharp escalation in hostilities after United States and Israeli air strikes last month targeted Iran, resulting in the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior officials. This aggressive move prompted a wave of retaliatory attacks from Tehran, significantly widening the conflict across the Gulf region. In response to these strikes, Iran launched counterattacks on US military bases in multiple Gulf countries, further expanding the scope of the confrontation and threatening regional stability.

Amid this volatile backdrop, Pakistan has intensified its diplomatic outreach, positioning itself as a key mediator between the United States and Iran. According to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on X, the discussion between FM Dar and the Qatari PM focused on prevailing regional and international developments, with both leaders emphasizing the urgent need for de-escalation. The Qatari side explicitly appreciated Pakistan's ongoing initiatives to foster peace and stability through constructive dialogue and diplomatic channels.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties and Regional Coordination

The ministry further noted that both sides reaffirmed the deep-rooted and fraternal ties between Pakistan and Qatar, agreeing to maintain close contact as the situation evolves. This conversation underscores Pakistan's proactive role in mitigating conflicts that have the potential to disrupt global energy supplies and trade routes, given the strategic importance of the Gulf region.

In a parallel diplomatic engagement, FM Dar also held a telephonic conversation with Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono. They discussed regional and international developments, along with bilateral matters of mutual interest, reaffirming the strong fraternal ties between Pakistan and Indonesia and committing to remain in close coordination.

Upcoming High-Level Visits to Islamabad

Adding to the diplomatic momentum, MOFA announced earlier in the day that the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Egypt will visit Islamabad from March 29 to 30, following an invitation extended by FM Dar. These four nations have been actively involved in mediation efforts between Washington and Tehran since the war was launched by the US and Israel on February 28. All are acutely vulnerable to threats against energy supplies and trade routes, highlighting the critical need for a peaceful resolution.

Pakistan has conveyed a US proposal for ending the war to Tehran and offered to host talks, with Iranian officials indicating that negotiations could potentially take place in Pakistan or Turkey. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif publicly offered Pakistan as a venue for US-Iran peace talks, a move that received an unexpected boost when former US President Donald Trump reposted it on his Truth Social platform. This action is widely interpreted in Islamabad as a tacit endorsement from Washington of Pakistan's emerging role as a mediator.

On Thursday, FM Dar confirmed that indirect communication between the US and Iran is currently underway, with messages being relayed through Pakistan. Turkiye and Egypt are also assisting in these diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions in the Middle East, showcasing a collaborative regional approach to conflict resolution.
