Syrian Authorities Claim Prevention of Hezbollah Missile Launch from Territory
Syrian state media reported on Sunday that security forces successfully thwarted a missile-launching operation orchestrated by the Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah from Syrian territory. The official SANA news agency, citing an interior ministry source, stated that the operation was intended to launch missiles across the border with the aim of destabilizing the country.
Details of the Alleged Sabotage Plot
The report described the incident as a sabotage plot carried out by a cell linked to what it termed the Hezbollah terrorist militia. This development comes amid heightened regional tensions, following a period from March 2 until April 17 when Hezbollah was engaged in conflict with Israel, drawing Lebanon into the broader Middle East war through rocket fire aimed at Israel in support of Tehran.
Syrian authorities have maintained a hostile stance toward Hezbollah, despite the group's historical role in Syria's civil war, which concluded in 2024. During that conflict, Hezbollah fought alongside the forces of then-leader Bashar Assad, who has since been ousted. The current Syrian Islamist government has rejected Iranian influence, marking a significant shift from the previous alliance under Assad, who was part of Iran's axis of resistance against Israel and facilitated weapons and money transfers from Iran to Hezbollah.
Hezbollah's Firm Denial and Counterclaims
In response to the allegations, Hezbollah issued a strong denial on Sunday, labeling the ministry's claims as false and fabricated. The group asserted that it has no activity, ties, or relationships with any party in Syria and maintains no presence on Syrian soil. Hezbollah called on Syrian authorities to conduct a thorough investigation before making accusations without evidence.
Furthermore, Hezbollah blamed the presence of intelligence services on Syrian soil for seeking to inflame tensions between Lebanon and Syria. This accusation follows a recent incident last week, where Damascus accused Hezbollah of being linked to a cell that attempted to plant an explosive device in front of a house belonging to an unidentified religious figure in the Bab Touma area of the Syrian capital.
Broader Context of Regional Tensions
The alleged missile plot and subsequent denials highlight the complex and evolving dynamics in the Middle East, particularly between Syria and Hezbollah. The shift in Syrian policy under the current Islamist authorities, who have distanced themselves from Iranian influence, contrasts sharply with the previous regime's support for Hezbollah as a proxy in regional conflicts.
This incident underscores the ongoing volatility in the region, where historical alliances are being tested and new tensions are emerging. The involvement of state media in reporting such events adds a layer of official narrative to the conflict, while Hezbollah's rebuttal emphasizes the group's efforts to maintain its stance and reputation amid changing political landscapes.
