KPK Governor Reviews Muharram Security, Visits Command Posts

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi on Thursday inspected security arrangements for Muharram-ul-Haram during a visit to the central 9th Muharram procession that originates from Naeem Shah Chowk in Saddar, Peshawar. He praised the efforts of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police, civil administration, and religious leaders from both Shia and Sunni communities for ensuring a peaceful observance of the holy month.

Comprehensive Security Measures in Place

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Kundi stated that comprehensive security measures had been implemented across the province, particularly in Peshawar, to ensure that Muharram and Youm-e-Ashur pass peacefully. He urged followers of all schools of thought to promote mutual respect, unity, and cooperation. The governor emphasized that the government had directed relevant authorities to provide all possible facilities to mourners participating in processions and religious gatherings, stressing that peace, brotherhood, and religious harmony should take precedence over political differences during Muharram.

Importance of Peace for Investment and Jobs

Mr. Kundi said lasting peace and stability in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are vital for attracting investment and generating employment opportunities. He also paid tribute to the sacrifices of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in Karbala, describing them as an enduring symbol of truth, justice, and steadfastness against oppression. Calling on citizens to uphold the teachings of Imam Hussain (RA), he appealed to the public to maintain religious harmony and cooperate with law-enforcement agencies throughout Muharram.

Visit to Supreme Command Post and Security Briefing

Later, Mr. Kundi visited the Supreme Command Post at Kohati Gate, where Deputy Commissioner Peshawar Sanaullah briefed him on security and monitoring arrangements. The governor was informed that Muharram processions and majalis are being monitored through modern surveillance systems and that nearly 90 percent of such events are taking place within the Walled City. Officials told the governor that more than 11,000 security personnel have been deployed across Peshawar for Muharram duties. He was also briefed on the route and security plan for the central Ashura procession.

Security Threats and Tribute to Forces

Appreciating the services of officials performing Muharram duties, Mr. Kundi noted that security threats from hostile elements remain significant this year. He said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had borne the brunt of terrorism and paid tribute to the sacrifices rendered by security forces and police personnel in maintaining peace.

Safe City Project and Camera Surveillance

The governor also visited the central control room established at the Supreme Command Post before proceeding to the Integrated Command and Control System at Police Lines, where Capital City Police Officer Dr. Mian Saeed briefed him on the province’s security monitoring network. According to the CCPO, more than 600 cameras are being used to monitor Muharram processions and gatherings, while advanced surveillance systems are also operational in Peshawar, Kohat, Hangu, Bannu, and Dera Ismail Khan. Mr. Kundi described the Safe City project as essential for strengthening law and order in the province and praised the performance of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police despite limited resources. He observed that police personnel in the province receive lower salaries than their counterparts elsewhere in the country and said he would recommend a pay increase to the chief minister.
