Belarus perceives a “blatant” attempt to drag it into the war in Ukraine, Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin said on Thursday, warning of growing external pressure on the country. Khrenin did not specify who he believed was behind such efforts, but appeared to point the finger at the West.
Allegations of Western Provocation
“Efforts are under way to prolong, and even expand, the hot conflict unleashed by the West in Ukraine. Today, we are acutely aware of a blatant attempt to drag Belarus into the war,” Khrenin said in comments published by his ministry. The statement did not provide evidence or name specific countries, but it aligns with Belarus’s longstanding alignment with Russia and criticism of NATO expansion.
Belarus-Russia Alliance
Belarus has been a key ally of Russia since the start of the war in Ukraine, allowing Russian troops to use its territory and hosting Russian tactical nuclear weapons. However, Minsk has so far avoided direct military involvement. Khrenin’s remarks come amid heightened tensions along Belarus’s border with Ukraine and increased NATO military activity in Poland and the Baltic states.
Regional Security Concerns
The defense minister’s warning reflects growing anxiety in Minsk that it could be drawn into a wider conflict. Belarus has repeatedly accused Ukraine and its Western allies of provocations, including drone incursions and espionage. In response, Belarus has bolstered its air defense systems and conducted military exercises near the border.
International Reaction
Western officials have dismissed Belarus’s claims as disinformation designed to justify closer military integration with Russia. The United States and European Union have imposed sanctions on Belarus for its support of Russia’s war effort. Meanwhile, Ukraine has warned that any direct Belarusian involvement would be met with a strong response.
