Germany Charges Ukrainian Suspect Over Nord Stream Sabotage

German prosecutors announced on Wednesday that they have formally charged a suspect in connection with the 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, which links Russia with Europe. The suspect, identified as Serhii K., is a Ukrainian national believed to have led the team that executed the operation.

Details of the Charges

Federal prosecutors confirmed to AFP that the man faces charges including "attacks on civilian energy infrastructure, causing an explosives detonation, and demolition of built structures." According to German media reports, Serhii K. is currently in detention in Hamburg, where he will stand trial.

Investigators allege that Serhii K. was in command on the yacht used to carry out the sabotage. The evidence against him is described as "overwhelming," as he reportedly incriminated himself during phone calls to relatives and acquaintances while in custody in Italy.

Extradition and Previous Developments

Serhii K. was arrested in summer 2025 in Italy and extradited to Germany in November of the same year. This development follows a separate incident last year, when a Polish court refused a German extradition request for another Ukrainian suspect in the same case.

The Nord Stream pipeline explosions occurred in September 2022, severely damaging the infrastructure that was critical for Russian gas supplies to Europe. The incident has been a subject of international investigation and geopolitical tension.
