Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari expressed sympathy with the Venezuelan government and its people as rescue and relief efforts continued in the aftermath of the disaster.
Earthquake Details and Casualties
According to reports, two strong earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale hit Venezuela on Wednesday. At least 32 people were killed, hundreds were injured, and search operations remained underway in the affected regions. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) warned that the final death toll could rise considerably, with predictive models suggesting the number of casualties may eventually reach into the thousands.
Prime Minister's Statement
In a statement posted on X, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. “On behalf of the people of Pakistan, I convey our heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Venezuela, especially the families of the victims,” the prime minister said. He also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured and reaffirmed Pakistan's solidarity with those affected by the tragedy.
President's Message
President Asif Ali Zardari also expressed deep grief over the loss of lives and large-scale destruction caused by the earthquakes. In a statement shared by the Presidency on X, he conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved families and the people of Venezuela. The president said the people of Pakistan share the sorrow of the Venezuelan nation and stand by them during this difficult period. He also prayed for the recovery of the injured and wished strength and resilience for all those impacted by the disaster.
Impact on Caracas and Rescue Efforts
The earthquakes caused severe damage in and around the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, where several buildings were reported to have collapsed. Venezuelan Interim President Delcy Rodriguez said the initial casualty figures did not include victims from La Guaira state, one of the areas worst hit by the earthquakes near Caracas. She added that rescue teams were carrying out intensive operations to find survivors trapped under collapsed buildings. President Zardari expressed hope that the people of Venezuela would face the tragedy with courage and determination and that ongoing rescue and relief activities would provide timely support to those affected.
