Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to embark on a significant regional diplomatic tour from July 2 to 4, beginning with a two-day visit to Iran before proceeding to Türkiye at the invitation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Visit to Iran: Strengthening Bilateral Ties
According to diplomatic sources, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will arrive in Tehran on July 2 for meetings with the Iranian leadership amid rapidly strengthening ties between the two neighboring countries. This follows Pakistan's widely acknowledged role in facilitating recent diplomatic engagement between Iran and the United States. Pakistan's mediation efforts have been credited by several international stakeholders with helping create conditions for dialogue that ultimately reduced regional tensions and opened a path toward a broader peace process.
During his stay in Iran, the Prime Minister is expected to hold separate meetings with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, senior government officials, and other key leaders. Discussions are likely to focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation, expanding trade and economic ties, regional security, border management, and the future trajectory of Pakistan-Iran relations in the aftermath of recent diplomatic developments. Recent exchanges between Islamabad and Tehran have reflected a growing convergence on regional stability and economic cooperation.
Participation in Funeral Ceremonies
A key feature of the visit will be Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's participation in the funeral ceremonies of the late Iranian leader Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei. The Pakistani premier is expected to attend the ceremonies on July 3 as a mark of solidarity with the people and government of Iran. President Pezeshkian had earlier personally invited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to participate in the funeral proceedings, while the Prime Minister publicly announced that Pakistan would be represented at the event.
The funeral is expected to draw leaders, dignitaries and senior officials from across the Muslim world and beyond, making it one of the most significant diplomatic gatherings in the region this year. Iranian authorities have announced an extensive schedule of commemorative events in Tehran, Qom and Mashhad.
Visit to Türkiye: Reviewing Strategic Partnership
Following the conclusion of his engagements in Iran, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to travel to Türkiye on July 4 at the invitation of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. During the visit, the two leaders are expected to review the full spectrum of Pakistan-Türkiye relations, including trade, investment, defence cooperation, regional connectivity and coordination on international issues.
The visit is being viewed as another step in Pakistan's increasingly active regional diplomacy, coming shortly after Islamabad's involvement in efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the Middle East and promoting dialogue between regional and international stakeholders. Analysts believe the Prime Minister's engagements in Tehran and Ankara will further reinforce Pakistan's strategic partnerships with both brotherly nations while underscoring Islamabad's growing role in regional peace and stability initiatives.
