Saudi Arabia has called for intensified global efforts to combat the illicit trafficking of small arms and light weapons, emphasizing the grave security, humanitarian, and economic consequences of this phenomenon. The statement was delivered by the Kingdom's permanent representative to the United Nations, Abdulaziz Alwasil, during a UN address.
Arab Group's Growing Concern
Alwasil highlighted the Arab Group's increasing focus on the issue, noting that illicit arms trafficking undermines regional stability and development. He stressed the importance of the Programme of Action, a consensus-based UN framework, as a key tool for combating this trade and fostering trust among nations.
Framework Independence and Cooperation
The Saudi envoy emphasized that the Programme of Action should remain a standalone international framework, ensuring its implementation does not overlap with other mechanisms lacking broad consensus. He called for enhanced international cooperation and technical assistance, including technology transfer and capacity-building for national institutions.
Saudi Arabia also urged continued study of modern technological developments to address emerging challenges related to arms trafficking. The Kingdom reaffirmed its commitment to working with UN member states to strengthen global efforts against this illicit trade.
