Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler stated that NATO is adjusting to a shifting security landscape and that the United States has no intention of withdrawing from the alliance. His comments came in written responses to Reuters ahead of the NATO summit scheduled for July 7-8 in Ankara.
Summit Focus and Participation
Turkiye will host 32 NATO leaders, along with officials from the Gulf and Asia-Pacific region, during the two-day summit. The gathering takes place amid internal tensions over burden-sharing, defense spending, and US complaints about allies' lack of involvement in reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Guler said the summit would concentrate on bloc unity, evaluating increased defense spending by allies, bolstering defense industry cooperation, and increasing support for Ukraine. He also emphasized that Ankara should be included in European defense initiatives.
NATO's Role and Adaptation
“NATO continues to be an unparalleled and fundamental platform for Euro-Atlantic security and defense. We evaluate the period we are going through not as a crisis, but as a process of adjusting to the changing security environment,” Guler said.
He reiterated that the US is not seeking to leave NATO but wants European allies and Canada to assume more responsibility for Europe's security. Guler stressed that any European defense plans must include Ankara.
Strategic Importance of Turkiye
Turkiye's strategic location and its role as a key NATO member make it a crucial partner in addressing regional security challenges. The summit in Ankara underscores the alliance's commitment to collective defense and adapting to new threats.
