The United States military has firmly denied Iranian allegations that a US missile interceptor caused damage to Kuwait International Airport. In a statement on Wednesday, US Central Command (CENTCOM) asserted that Iran deliberately struck the civilian airport with drones in what it described as a "calculated and unjustified attack."
Iran's Claims and US Response
Iran's Tasnim news agency, citing the Revolutionary Guards, had earlier claimed that the destruction at the airport terminal resulted from an error in US Patriot systems that failed to intercept Iranian missiles. However, CENTCOM countered these assertions, labeling them as false and reiterating that Iran was responsible for the attack.
Kuwait confirmed on Wednesday that the Iranian attacks killed one person and wounded several others, forced the closure of its airport, and damaged diplomatic missions. The Kuwaiti foreign ministry condemned the attacks, which targeted vital and civilian infrastructure.
Escalation of Hostilities
Hostilities between Iran and the United States have escalated sharply. Iran claimed responsibility for attacks on US military assets in Kuwait and Bahrain, including the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet. In response, Washington reported intercepting missiles launched toward regional allies and conducting retaliatory strikes.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) stated it launched missiles and drones against the US Fifth Fleet headquarters and an airbase in a Gulf country, citing a US attack on a communications tower south of Qeshm Island. Iranian media also reported that the IRGC Navy targeted a vessel identified as Panaya with missiles after accusing US forces of striking an Iranian tanker near the Strait of Hormuz.
Regional Impact
Kuwait's military said its air defenses intercepted hostile missile and drone attacks, while Bahrain activated warning sirens and urged residents to seek shelter. The US military conducted strikes on Iran's Qeshm Island after defeating multiple Iranian missiles and drones launched toward Kuwait and Bahrain.
Iranian media reported explosions near Qeshm Island, close to the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The activity occurred after Iran stopped communicating with mediators about extending a ceasefire in the war with the US and Israel, according to reports from semi-official Iranian news agencies.
Diplomatic Context
Last week, Washington and Tehran said they had reached a tentative framework aimed at ending the conflict, but neither side has formally endorsed a final agreement. Iranian media reported that communications between Tehran and Washington had lapsed for several days. Since mid-March, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly said a negotiated settlement is within reach, potentially addressing Iran's nuclear program. Washington maintains that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons remains its primary objective, while Tehran insists its nuclear activities are entirely peaceful.
