US launches maritime coalition to reopen Strait of Hormuz

The United States is launching an international coalition aimed at restarting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a State Department official confirmed on Thursday. The vital waterway remains largely blocked amid stalled negotiations with Iran.

Maritime Freedom Construct initiative

The initiative, named the 'Maritime Freedom Construct' (MFC), will take steps to ensure safe passage for vessels. According to a State Department official who spoke on condition of anonymity, the MFC will provide real-time information, safety guidance, and coordination to facilitate secure transit through the waters.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the MFC is a joint effort between the State Department and US Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees American military forces in the Middle East. The State-led component, based in Washington, DC, will serve as the diplomatic operations hub, uniting partners and the commercial shipping industry.

Background of the crisis

Iran responded to US-Israeli attacks that began on February 28 by threatening ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz. This brought traffic to an effective halt in the narrow waterway and sent global fuel prices skyrocketing. Despite a ceasefire between the United States and Iran, shipping through the strait has continued to be effectively halted with no immediate relief in sight.

Efforts to end the war have stalled. The Iranian side reportedly proposed this week to ease its chokehold on the strait in exchange for Washington lifting its retaliatory blockade while broader negotiations continue.

Diplomatic efforts and allied involvement

President Donald Trump has criticized allies for their reluctance to get involved in the war on Iran, urging oil-reliant nations to take responsibility for opening the Strait of Hormuz. A diplomatic cable obtained by the Journal insisted that collective action was essential to demonstrate unified resolve and impose meaningful costs on Iranian obstruction of transit through the strait.

The cable described the MFC as a US-led initiative and stated, 'Your participation will strengthen our collective ability to restore freedom of navigation and protect the global economy.' Meanwhile, the UK and France have led talks on a separate maritime effort, recently holding a meeting with over 50 countries on the issue.
