Kaaba Washing Ceremony Starts with Door Curtain Raised

The General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque raised the curtain covering the Kaaba’s door on Tuesday, initiating the annual washing ceremony of Islam’s holiest site. The ritual, held on the 15th of Muharram (1448 A.H.), is one of the oldest traditions associated with the Kaaba, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Ceremony Reflects Kingdom’s Commitment

The authority stated that the ceremony underscores Saudi Arabia’s long-standing dedication to caring for the Kaaba, a tradition dating back to the reign of King Abdulaziz and continuing under King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. On behalf of King Salman, Prince Saud bin Mishaal bin Abdulaziz, deputy governor of Makkah Region, led the ceremonial washing.

Washing Process and Materials

Prince Saud washed the interior walls of the Kaaba using a mixture of Zamzam water, rose water, and premium oud. The Kaaba’s cloths were also soaked in this mixture, while the three pillars and flooring inside were washed. Surfaces were dried, and interior walls were perfumed to complete the cleansing.
