The Punjab Communication and Works (C&W) Department has launched pre-emptive measures ahead of the upcoming monsoon season, mobilizing its field formations to protect roads and bridges from urban flooding and potential flood emergencies. This decision was reached during a meeting chaired by Provincial Minister for Communication and Works (C&W) Malik Sohaib Ahmed Bharth on Tuesday.
Meeting Details and Attendees
The meeting was attended by Secretary C&W Raja Jahangir Anwar, special secretaries, additional secretaries, and chief engineers. Superintending engineers (SEs) and executive engineers (XENs) participated via online link. During the session, the minister received a briefing on the rehabilitation of roads damaged by last year's floods. Officials reported that restoration and rehabilitation work on flood-affected roads had been completed at a cost of Rs16 billion.
Minister's Directives
Addressing the participants, Malik Sohaib Ahmed Bharth directed that all precautionary arrangements for dealing with urban flooding and possible flood emergencies during the monsoon season be finalized on a priority basis. He emphasized the need to ensure the availability of pumps, backup generators, and additional machinery for efficient drainage of rainwater. The minister instructed all chief engineers, SEs, and XENs to personally inspect bridges, culverts, and drainage systems along roads in their respective jurisdictions, ensuring proper cleaning and maintenance.
Timeline and Field Engagement
He further directed that all flood preparedness measures be completed within 15 days and urged officers to remain actively engaged in field operations rather than working from offices. Emphasizing inter-departmental coordination, the minister stated that close liaison with all relevant departments is essential for effective management of urban flooding and timely response to any emergency situation during the monsoon season.
The meeting also reviewed the progress of ongoing infrastructure projects and discussed strategies to minimize disruptions caused by heavy rains. The C&W Department has been directed to maintain constant vigilance and report any issues promptly to ensure public safety and road integrity.
